Picture this;
It is garbage day in your neighborhood. All your neighbors are scrambling out to the curb in various forms of dress: overalls and gumboots, housecoats, suits and ties, kids in school uniforms, but they are all doing one thing in common, tugging their huge overflowing garbage bins out to the curb. Meanwhile, you are standing at your window with a warm mug in your hand just watching the chaos ensue while thinking to yourself, “I’m so glad I don’t have to think about taking my garbage out anymore”.
Such is the premise behind the Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson
Bea Johnson was living the “average American life” as she explains in the introduction,
“Not so long ago, things were different: I owned a three-thousand-square-foot home, two cars, four tables, and twenty-six chairs. I filled a sixty-four-gallon can of trash weekly.
Today, the less I own, the richer I feel. And I don’t have to take out the trash!
It all changed a few years ago. The big house did not burn down, nor did I become a Buddhist monk.”
Bea then goes on to share her personal journey of waste reduction and how she reduced the waste from her family of four, to one small jar per year. Yes, you read that right, one JAR per year!
Positives about The Zero Waste Home Book:
I personally found this book to be extremely inspiring. Ever since I was in 5th or 6th grade when I was part of the “Save the Earth Club” I have been on a mission to help our poor planet out and do our part to recycle. In that club we learned about the 3 R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. But in The Zero Waste Home , Bea takes it to the next level and helps us learn the 5 R’s
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
- Rot
- Refuse
I really like how most of the book is laid out and I really liked the recipes and the A-Z lists of ways to incorporate her ideas into your everyday life.
Negatives about The Zero Waste Home Book:
The only negative thought that I have about the Zero Waste Home, is that I wish there were more pictures. I’m a pretty visual person and I think it would be helpful to have pictures of either; ways Bea has incorporated her ideas in her own home or general picture of what product recipes are supposed to look like if you make them yourself.
One way I have discovered to get a visual of how this zero waste lifestyle works is to watch this interview with Bea on Youtube:

This blog is definitely rather handy since I’m at the moment creating an internet floral website – although I am only starting out therefore it’s really fairly small, nothing like this site. Can link to a few of the posts here as they are quite. Thanks much. Zoey Olsen
