Exploring The Calgary Zoo with Kids

Travel looks very different in 2020/21 depending on where you’re from and where you’re going. Please, be sure to check local, state/provincial and federal restrictions and be willing to adhere to any and all safety regulations before planning a trip to any of the places you may read about on this site.

We are exploring the Calgary Zoo! You can check out part 1 Exploring Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump with kids here and part 2 called Sleeping with Dinosaurs ~ The Best Way to Experience the Royal Tyrrell Museum with Kids.

This is my favourite part because I get to share the main reason we went to Alberta, which was visiting family  🙂  Awww sappy, I know, but it’s true!  My sister-in-law and husband and 6 kids live in Calgary, so we drove there after our adventures in Drumheller.

I have to say one of the most frequent comments from our kids while driving around Alberta was, “It’s soooooooo flat! And straight!!” I somewhat agree with them, there are a lot of rolling hills, but it is definitely flat compared to what we’re used to!

We spent 3 1/2 days with our family and it was so wonderful watching all the cousins interact. They are all different ages (theirs are 18,16,15,13,5 & 3 and ours bridge the gap a little at 13,11 & 8)  yet they all get along for the most part.

My Cadence and Gabe had a blast with their birds and we all enjoyed the antics of their two puppies 🙂  Unfortunately I didn’t really get any pictures with the teenagers, but I was so happy I got to spend a bit of one-on-one auntie time with most of them.  We miss them all already!

What kinds of animals did we see at the Calgary Zoo:

My kids requested a visit to the zoo while in Calgary, so we spent the better part of a day exploring the animals at the Calgary Zoo.

Tigers

Snow Leopard

Camels

Cadence is currently obsessed with camels so she HAD to get a photo with them 🙂

Lions

Giraffes 🦒 (including a mama and baby!)

Baby giraffe at the Calgary zoo
The little baby giraffe was sooooo cute!
Nice and warm in the giraffe enclosure.

Meerkats

It’s Timon, where’s Pumba?!
Gabe, the wannabe wolf!

Bison

cousin of the buffalo, the bison are majestic

We saw some cousins of the buffalo we learned about at Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. But these are actually bison. These guys are very impressive and it is easy to imagine the thunderous sounds of their hooves when they used to roam the plains by the millions.

Penguins

Penguins at the zoo
My favorite, penguins! They were so cute!

Among many many other animals, we saw the lions, tigers and bears (oh my!), the baby giraffe and her family, the snow leopard, meerkats, wolves, bison, camels and (my personal favorites) the penguins.

The kids also enjoyed a carousel ride, playing on the awesome playgrounds and wandering around the gorgeous, lush, and informative conservatory.

The conservatory at the Calgary Zoo is simply gorgeous and lush. It is a great place to warm up and get a break if you are visiting in the cooler months.

So, that’s it for our whirlwind five day tour of southern Alberta. We’re now back at home enjoying the second week of spring break with play dates, sleepovers and a visit to grandma’s which I should get ready for right now!

Disclaimer: All thoughts and opinions are my own, I have not been compensated in any way for this post, I just think it’s a really cool place!
